Back in the UK - a new kind of eco-village
Tags:
Being on Vorovoro last year was an amazing experience for me and my children which I hope to be repeating in August 2009. The biggest impact I think, was the way it made me look at my surroundings and what we should be doing to live more sustainably. I never used to think about recycling, not using plastic bags, where all the waste goes to, etc. but since then, this has all become part of my everyday existence.
So back in the UK, the brain cells started working overtime. I felt we could do more a bit closer to home. After all, Fiji is a long way away and expensive to get to. So, my idea of the UK’s first ever crowd-sourced eco-village was born – http://www.greenwellymonster.com. I’m thinking big. I’m thinking the next Eden project here, guys. Let’s create an eco-village which will aim to be as self-sufficient as possible right here in the UK where people can come and visit, have their own plot of land to grow organic veggies and herbs, plant a fruit tree, experience “The Good Life” first hand, get their hands dirty, learn about all the green issues which we have learnt about, look after some animals, etc. Yes, we will have crappy UK weather to deal with and yes, we will most likely need some planning permission, no, it won’t have any cultural element, no, it won’t be on a tropical island, no, there won’t be a grand bure, and no, there won’t be any beautiful sunsets but it will have a similar ethos to what TW has and could possibly be used for local TW gatherings in the future.
But I can’t do it alone! For this to work, I need as many people as possible to take part ie. a crowd. So come on guys, please register on the site here – http://www.greenwellymonster.co.uk/register.htm – it’s free to register and you are under no obligation if you do (you only pay once we have found a suitable site for the eco-village) – and tell all your mates about it too. This is our chance to create something worthwhile – who knows – it could become the next biggest tourist attraction in the UK?!
