I am ticklish for wind right now and it wants to blow me across to the Pacific. I have spent most of this year building a sizeable wind turbine for Vorovoro using modest workshop skills and readily available components. It is currently assembled in my back yard and I hope to power a barbecue event from it soon for it’s maiden flight. I have a juicy set of AGM ( amalgamated glass matt ) batteries coupled to a charge controller and hinged tower. If I get the shipping right the turbine will be heading out to Vorovoro by sea freight on a long journey starting early August. I will meet it by October on Vorovoro and install the beast with local muscle. Advanced co-ordination of tribe help is required pre, during and post installation to make this a reality. A call to arms for current island inhabitants to build a support tower with my guidance is required. Would you like to participate? I want to impart all of the technical bloom of this design to members and locals alike so that further turbine builds can penetrate the Fijian archipelago or even home soils. No heavy industry is required for manufacture, just some wits, a whittling knife and determination. The design is a gift, patents need not apply. Fresh thoughts for the distribution of power would be welcome ( based on current real needs ) such as lighting, pumping and refridgeration. The most poignant displacement however would be the diesel generator in Tui Mali’ village. I’m up for it and I have 500 clean Watts up for it too….

Alan, brilliant to hear from you and to finally see the famous turbine! I remember us talking about the island’s power requirements at the gathering in London ages ago! Good luck getting it installed. Wow – two turbines on the island – we’ll be able to start selling our electricity to the Fijian national grid soon…

Thanks for the great support. I will post a progress blog on a weekly basis. Also take a look in the energy forums for the meaty stuff. I’ll be managing the project from there this week. Regarding the members visiting the island during the installation, I especially welcome your support. I’ll need a tower building and rigging team ! ( Kate, you have a loud voice so I nominate you to be drillmaster :).
Alan – What inspiring work my man. I wish I had similar skills I could contribute more with, however I am hardworking, a grafter you may say, and I will DEFINATLY help you with the installation.
