“TRIBE WANTED” is the fascinating story of Tribewanted.com, a revolutionary eco-tourism project founded by twentysomething Ben Keene.

As featured in the documentary series, Ben’s story follows the ups and downs of a global online network of like-minded travelers and an indigenous Fijian community as they attempt to build a new life on a 200-acre island in the South Pacific. All major decisions on the island are voted on by an online tribe that anyone around the world can join.

There are many challenges to overcome. A fire sweeps the island, a military coup (delayed until the end of a rugby match!) brews on the mainland, and a tropical cyclone threatens to wipe out the emerging village. Online there are other storms to fight, as accusations of scam artistry, tribal politics and the regular grind of debates and decision-making among Tribewanted’s 1000+ members push the adventure and the business to the very edge. But in the end, with a little luck and a lot of hard work, they might just build their paradise…

“The best book I’ve ever read” Aimmee McKenzie

“Couldn’t put this book down – What a story. In a world where most of us fail to attempt anything bold, exciting or different it is refreshing to read of an entrepreneur who does so half the world away in a profoundly unique, intact Polynesian culture. Great pictures, too!”
Ryan Garcia

Unfortunately, the book is not yet available on Amazon.com (USA) and the shipping from the UK to the US is still very high. Hopefully it will be available in the US soon?

Just finished the Tribewanted book. It was an excellent read and gave more of an insight into the project than the TV series. I felt quite emotional when I finished the book and feel even more inspired now! Definitely worth a read, however I would suggest getting it online as I went into my local Waterstones and they didn’t have it in stock.

As Katie said the book gave more of an insight into the Tribewanted project than the TV series, particularly in terms of the first stages of the project.

I felt that the book really made the reader feel as though they were experiencing the events as they happened and were in touch with the highs and lows.

A perfect insight into the project for people who have yet to visit.

I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others. As the book was written from a personal, subjective point of view, it made you sympathetic (most of the time!) to the writer and therefore emotionally invested in finding out what happens next – which I guess is the idea – book your ticket to Vorovoro!

I was saddened to read about the attacks on the project internet by bloggers. I believe that people are at heart trusting, honest and willing to share details of their lives with people they’ve struck a rapport with.

The problem with the internet is that you lose that dimension of what a person is like – their typed words can give you an idea – but actions speak louder than words and until you actually meet someone face-to-face, you don’t really know what they are like.

So a lot of us put information about ourselves into cyberspace, hoping that others will use it in a nice way – but some people exploit that, just as in face-to-face meetings you find some nasty customers.

It’s a risk you run when trying to run an online community – I have to say for me personally this is the first time I’ve ever blogged on an open forum or made ‘friends’ with people I’ve never met, as I’m trusting that people involved in this project are decent and caring.

It would be interesting to see a project report at some stage on how successfully the online and actual communities are working and how Tribewanted anticipates they will continue to work together as the project continues.

I have just started reading the book, only one chapter 3 and I absolutely love it! I cant believe I was in Fiji in February and knew nothing about this until I returned to the UK.

I found reading the book very important to find out about the beginning of the project as i only saw a couple of the BBC documentaries.
Ben also added a number of ideas and thoughts that were good for mulling over.
And of course I take it everywhere i visit as the quickest way to introduce friends / family to this project!!

As guys say, well written and great insight into Tribe life… Get a good feel of what emotions setting up such a project entails. And the hard work!!! Anyone interested in Tribe should take a look…

On subject of Fiji, Tribers might enjoy novel by Nicholas Hogg, ‘Show Me the Sky.’ About hunt for missing rock star, but also tells of first ‘foreigners’ settling Fiji in 1830s.

Heard about the island through work as I work at the legendary Malvern Gazette! Have just spent a week chilling on Majorca and took Ben’s book with me as ideal holiday reading and it was! I read it in a day and a half and then passed it on to one of my fellow holidaymakers who is currently reading it.
Fantastic read especially chilling out on holiday – I am full of admiration for anyone involved with the project.
