It’s time to tickle your tonsils and tantalize your taste buds!

Finally, the time has come to share the scrumptious recipes from Vorovoro’s very own creative and colourful head chef’s Va and Frances so we can cook up some tasty treats across the Tribewanted network!

Plenty of tribe members have assisted the lovely girls out in our buzzing kitchen with grating coconuts, chopping chillis, baking bread, cutting carrots, squeezing lemons, juggling pawpaw, cooking cassava, mashing potatoes, dicing green beans, slicing watermelon, as well as helping out with making and baking the famous ‘cakey cakey’ and always ask ‘so how can I make this at home?!’

From now on, we will regularly be posting up a recipe and a list of ingredients so you will be able to get your stirring spoons out and start your very own Viti cuisine classes in your own home…

Although not everyone has a concrete oven ‘Pupu’ creation or a coconut palm tree (with husker and grater) in their garden, hopefully with a bit of creativity and some small adjustments, tribe members will be able to follow the recipes and spread the Vorovoro deliciousness so you will be able to close your eyes, hear the giggles and laughter, smell the baking and imagine being back in the Vorovoro kitchen!

So the first recipe for the season is our very popular spoon slopping, super dooper Dahl soup!

DAHL SOUP (35 servings…you never know who might just turn up!)

INGREDIENTS:

2kg dahl (split peas)
3-4 jugs water
2 onions
1 clove of garlic
A bunch of fresh Coriander
A pinch of pepper and salt
Geera (spices)
Sarso (mustard seed)
A mixture of vegetables of your choice!

RECIPE:

Chop the onions, garlic and coriander and wash and clean the dahl. Also cook any vegetables that you would like to add, maybe try peppers, courgettes or pumpkin!
Then fry the onions, garlic, geera, sarso and then pour in the dahl.
Fry for 5 minutes but keep on turning to avoid burnage!
Then pour in only 1 jug of water.
Simmer for 15 minutes until the dahl is tender, then pour on the rest of the water. Let it gently bubble.
When cooked, add any of your chosen vegetables and throw in the chopped coriander. Meat or fish can be added too if there are some big meat eaters out there. Easy peasy!

SERVING TIP FROM FRANCES:

‘This can be either eaten with hot, homemade bread or boiled rice seasoned with herbs. Very nice.’

Kana Vinaka!

Good luck with the making and baking…and please share with everyone how the cooking went and add any tasty tips to improve the recipe!

Oh my god! I’m so looking forward to eating this again on the island! I’ll be sending my mum to this page and the rest so the family can try the great food out at home and get a taste of Vorovoro! Vina’a va’a levu Amy! :-)

kere kere banana cake recipe from Va & Francis. I tried it the other day (without guidance) and it tasted good but looked more like pie than cake…mind you I don’t have a doubled-barreled oven!
