Take 2 on plastic bag reincarnation...

for those who weren’t around in the early days, there is a favorite episode of attempts at reuse at always makes me laugh – what to do with plastic bags? well, since pillows and soft materials often become dank on the island quickly from the humidity, it was decided that we could use plastic bags as stuffing for some pillows. the plastic wouldn’t hold humidity or bacteria…
well, frances had a good chuckle over the new “pillows” and the crinkly sound they made. not the most comfortable packing material, and that was roundly the end of that great idea.
i just came across a blog which had much better ideas for what to do with all those bags. and, seeing as how handy the ladies on the island can be, i thought i’d post it here in case amy or someone coming over might want to experiment – crochet bags into either new bags or rugs!

Bula sia KazoOOoo! Naka na blog…just checked out the websites and the rugs created out of plastic bags are surprisingly beautiful. I do remember Carol having a bag made out of plastic bags when she was here which was also a really cool design. Hopefully we could have a go again at doing something with the plastic bags we still currently have on the island although the kitchen girls are getting a lot better at declining bags on their shopping trip every Wednesday and Saturday. We currently use Tribewanted cloth bags which are really strong and perfect for the market, as well as Eco bags from a local supermarket. The last shop, only one plastic bag returned with the bread from the bakery! Woop! Now that the Tribe wanted market place are selling the cloth bags, (buy one, give one to the local community) we have also noticed that tribe members are getting much better at refusing the plastic bag as plastic ain’t fantastic! Slowly but surely we are finally reducing how many plastic bags come onto the island.
Anyway, will get our creative juices going and follow in James Strawbridge’s direction and make the plastic bag into something useful! And I am sure it will give Francis and Va some more giggles…
