Natural Selection - or not!

When I offered to help water the plants I had no idea that I would be left with the responsibility of deciding which plants would live or die. Ok that sounds pretty dramatic but with a seriously short supply of water on the island there was not enough on a daily basis to water the plants that have been lovingly planted by the Fijians and the Tribe Members. So as you stand with a watering can, knowing you have only 2 litres of water to go around, what decisions are you faced with – do I water the ones that look like they will survive? Do I not bother with the ones that look like they are dead? Do I give them all a tiny sprinkle of water or do I give a few a good drenching? Which will yield the best crop for the island? Quite honestly, most of the plants apart from some of the beans looked near to dying. I spent a long time looking and indeed talking to them (OK OK so it gets to you) and then decided to give a reasonable drink to those who looked like they was a possibility they would make it through but I did leave a small drop for those who despite all odds looked like they might just survive with a little sprinkle. Was I right or wrong? That remains to be seen.

what a fascinating way to look at it!
but you didn’t mention that not only were you lovingly considering the fate of each plant but also you trekked well down the beach to the fresh spring a couple of times a day to drag back as much water as it would yield for the plants. that’s dedication, sue!!
Sue that job is for heroes/heroines. An early rise and alot of manual work with the water lugging and then life and death situations as well. You deserve a medal and all the other budding gardeners and waterers. i would raise a bilo to you, but im not sure if thats the done thing, and i don’t have any grog, sad times. can we grow it in england?
Thanks for this Sue as it is a salutary reminder of how precious water is. Very hard to think of here as this has been such a very wet summer so there has been no lack of water – even the destruction of crops because of too much water.
Isn’t there much of the grey water at the moment?
